Gen. Meelis Kiili, the commander of the Estonian Defence League, is a candidate for the command of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East.<\/div>\n<p>According to Kiili, the United Nations have turned to several countries with the question if they could appoint a military commander for the mission, daily Postimees reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Kiili sees Austria and Sweden as Estonia&rsquo;s main competitors, but stated that the UN had also turned to Argentina, Norway, and Chile.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that the state had asked him if he would be ready to put an application together. The UNTSO commander is chosen by Secretary-General of the United Nations&nbsp;Ant&oacute;nio Guterres. The new commander will be named fairly soon, as the handover is set for July 17 this year in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>UNTSO was begun in the late 1940s after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
